In 2024, the Pittsburgh Steelers had one of the best off-seasons in franchise history, particularly in the free-agency market. The team signed starters such as wide receiver Van Jefferson and safety DeShon Elliott, but the most significant signing was linebacker Patrick Queen.
The 25-year-old linebacker initially joined the Baltimore Ravens after being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Throughout his time with the team, he was a key starter on the defense, with his best year coming in 2023. Playing alongside All-Pro linebacker Roquan Smith, Queen had a standout year, combining for 133 tackles and 3.5 sacks, helping him earn his first Pro Bowl nod.
However, due to the Ravens’ slim cap space heading into the 2024 off-season and the linebacker’s rookie deal ending, Queen was a free agent for the first time in his career. The Pittsburgh Steelers, desperately needing linebacker depth, quickly swooped up the Pro Bowl talent on a three-year, $41 million deal.
After the news broke about the signing, former Baltimore teammates of Queen were quick to speak about his betrayal and switch to the division rivals, including two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson, who shared his thoughts on X.
“You’re Dead to us, Queen. Good luck, You’re Dead to me.” Jackson said in the tweet.
Considering the two teams would play each other twice in the upcoming season, tensions surrounding Patrick Queen’s name were high. The rivals’ first matchup would come in week 11 in Pittsburgh, with division leadership on the line.
In the intense match, Queen had an incredible revenge game, forcing the ball out on a crucial drive late in the second quarter. The young star would finish the day with ten total tackles, a tackle-for-loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and an 80.5 PFF coverage grade, all of which highly contributed to the Steelers’ victory against the division rivals.
After the game, an ecstatic Patrick Queen shared some kind words about playing his former team.
“I thought back then I would be a little more [ticked]off. I woke up this morning, and I didn’t feel any anger. I just felt content with life and the game and just being where I’m supposed to be. … God put me in this place for a reason. I was just heated at the situation that occurred. So I just gave my faith to God and trusted Him that I was in the right place for a reason.”
Head coach Mike Tomlin was questioned about Queen’s performance as well.
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’m glad he is on our team.” Tomlin said in the post-game interview.
