Since 2016, the Dallas Cowboys have been one of the top teams in the NFC, with a record of 82-49, ranking fourth in the league. The team has a rich history and has much to be proud of. In 2023, they performed exceptionally, with a 12-5 record and winning the NFC East. However, the offseason has been nothing but terrible for Dallas, which points to a possible end of the Cowboys’ dominant reign in the NFC.
The team has lost a number of skilled players, including Tyler Biadasz, Leighton Vander Esch, Micheal Gallup, Tyron Smith, and Tony Pollard. Which the team barley addressed, only signing minor players such as Eric Kendricks, Royce Freeman, and Ezekiel Elliott. And the draft was little to no different. While the Tyler Guyton pick was solid and needed, the rest of the draft was underwhelming. Overall, the 2024 offseason was a major disappointment for many Dallas fans.
But the much bigger problem is the future of the team’s two best players, Dak Prescott and Ceedee Lamb. These two men are on the top of their game and are waiting for new contracts. The 2023 All-pro receiver is currently on his fifth-year option of his rookie deal and is requesting to be paid similarly to other top paid receivers in the league, which is around 30 million per year. The Cowboys have shown little interest in agreeing to those terms which hurts both the team and Lamb’s value. The young star has been absent from almost all Cowboys related activities. The team is still in contact with Lamb as of recently, but no moves have been made.
As for Dak Prescott, the man is coming off his best season. Leading the team to a 12-5 and posting MVP level statistics, Prescott is awaiting a new contract from the team. The pro-bowl quarterback signed a massive deal back in 2021 and is now on the final year of that contract. In the specifics of the extension, Dallas is not allowed to trade the superstar or use the franchise tag on him. This puts the team at an even worse place as the only option is to pay him. Dak is a franchise player who produces at an incredible rate. So, losing him to another team would be a terrible move.
The Cowboys have been a powerhouse for a while with Prescott starting at quarterback. And Dak’s play has only gotten better with Ceedee Lamb in the mix. So, losing either of them would not only hurt the team, but also would hurt the other player’s production. The Cowboys are in a very tricky situation ahead of the 2024 season and with no actions being made by the front office, the question is still there. What will the Dallas Cowboys do for the future?
